ABOUT US

Ironical the potential of adventure and sports tourism as a revenue earner for the state is yet to be tapped to its fullest extent, but the trend is gradually changing. Uttaranchal Kayaking, Canoeing and Rafting Association (UKCRA) was formed on 9th August, 2005 with the objective to encourage water sports in Uttaranchal and develop the local sporting talents into medal prospects at the national and international level. Under the patronage of His Excellency the Governor of Uttaranchal Shri Sudarshan Agarwal, UKCRA has been functioning under the dynamic leadership of its founder President Shri Kedar Singh Fonia and honorary Secretary and water sports enthusiast Smt Alaknanda Ashok. Affiliated to the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA). UKCRA has been holding water adventure sports and training camps in Uttaranchal with the active support from Bengal Engineering Group & Centre (BEG&C), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), IIT – Roorkee and some other educational institutions.

During 5th to 8th Oct, 05 as, UKCRA collaborated with IKCA and BEG, Roorkee to organize the 16th National Kayaking and Canoeing Championship, in which 26 team from allover India participated. The event was held in the Upper Ganga Canal at Roorkee under various categories of Kayaking (K-1,K-2,K-4 for 1000m,500m and 200m) and Canoeing (C-1,C-2 for 1000m,500m and 200m). In the overall medals tally, the Uttaranchal team lead the honours followed by Kerala and Army Control Board.

Another major tournament, the 3rd Asia Rafting championship was organized during 2151 to 23rd Oct, as in which besides the Indian teams, teams from Japan, Taiwan and Bhutan also participated. The tournament was inaugurated by His Excellency the Governor of Uttaranchal Shri Sudarshan Agarwal.

UKCRA is committed to promoting adventure sports in the state of Uttaranchal in an eco-friendly manner. It shall be our endeavour to ensure that the sacred Ganges and its beautiful surroundings are kept clean, healthy and free from pollution. UKCRA is passionate about water adventure sports and it believes that sports and eco-tourism should complement each other.
